spiritual direction and radical companionship

I’m Lindsay Donnelly-Bullington, a trained and commissioned spiritual director and trauma-informed, anti-oppressive religious professional.

We are all in a never-ending process of becoming, and I’m here to join you in noticing, shaping, and reflecting on that process.

More about me

What I offer

Nurture your connection with self, values, spirit, and significance.

Spiritual direction is a relationship with a trained practitioner built to reorient our questions, observations, and transitions towards what is important, sacred, greater than or beyond ourselves.

Some people come to spiritual direction to deepen their spiritual practices, others to find authentic language to understand their own beliefs, and others to experiment with something new.

Typical Session

Our first session will be a brief (and free) 15 minute consultation where we can get to know each other better and where you can better decide if you want to embark on this journey with me. Our sessions after that will be flexible as I learn more about what is significant to you. We’ll typically start with silence until you feel called to break it. I have resources to offer like poems, prayers, creative exercises, lectio divina, tarot cards, and more, if those appeal to you, and we can integrate your practices into our sessions as well.

I’m happy to build a long-term companioning relationship that spans several years, and I’m just as happy to join with you for a short season if a particular question, decision, or event needs a different kind of attention.

Who I Love Working With

Trans people! My practice starts with my experience as a trans woman and as a person lucky enough to be surrounded by trans community who remind me that transition is constant, unavoidable, and so holy; that how we’ve been is not how we must be; and that another world is not only possible but inevitable.

Queer/polyamorous/kinky people. You do not need to conceal important parts of your life with me, nor do you need to spend precious time in our sessions explaining yourself, your identities, or your dynamics.

Unitarian Universalists. As a raised UU and a UU religious professional, I’m more than eager to accompany you along your journey in our shared faith.

Activists and folks working for collective liberation

Punks, freaks, misfits – I love you!

You – exactly as you are. If you’re looking here, I trust you hold the curiosity, imagination, and bravery needed to start a journey in spiritual direction. Whether you’ve worked with other directors or not, let’s try it out.

FAQs

How are spiritual direction sessions conducted?

I offer spiritual direction online over Zoom.

What is spiritual direction?

Spiritual direction is a space held by a trained professional to reflect on spiritual practices and notice how the God of your understanding is showing up in your life.

How much does spiritual direction cost?

I offer spiritual direction on an equity-based sliding scale. People with greater access to wealth or people who can use professional expenses for spiritual direction are encouraged to pay $140-$200 per session. Those with less access to wealth who cannot use professional expenses for spiritual direction are invited to pay $40-$100 per session.

How often are spiritual direction sessions?

Typically, we will meet once per month. I am excited to work with clients for years or for a short season. If you are only planning to attend spiritual direction for a short period, we can consider meeting twice monthly.

Do I need to be Christian/be religious/believe in God to seek spiritual direction?

I welcome people of many faiths and no faith into spiritual direction. No matter what you believe, we’ll journey to learn where your deepest beliefs and core values invite you to reflect, deepen, and transform.

What does “radical companionship” mean?

Our world is hurting with oppression, occupation, violence, and exploitation. These afflictions have profound material impacts on our lives and our bodies. Just the same, they plague our souls and spirits. My spiritual direction practice aims to be anti-oppressive and liberatory, and my goal with this practice is to play a part in building a world with love at the center by accompanying those who live on the margins and those who work to transform our world to steady us all in an upside-down world. Through my own spiritual direction, I have better understood what life-limiting beliefs I held onto and could release and have experienced moments of liberation or wholeness in a broken world. I believe spiritual direction is a site of the Revolution, a training ground for the Revolution, and a time of rest, recovery, and meaning-making during the Revolution. Another world is possible – another world is ours to build.

What training do you have in spiritual direction?

I am commissioned through the two-year Spiritual Direction Formation and Certification program at the Leadership Institute for Growth, Healing, and Transformation at Meadville Lombard Theological School. I also received a Master of Divinity with a concentration in Interfaith Leadership at Boston University School of Theology, where I gained a background in multicultural, interfaith, and humanist spiritual care.

How is this different than therapy or coaching?

The goal of spiritual direction is to nurture connection to self and the sacred through contemplation, reflection, and spiritual practice. The goal of therapy is to address mental health issues and to become more effective in their lives through tools like diagnosis, evaluation, and developing coping strategies. The goal of coaching is to support people in specific goals through motivation and accountability. Spiritual direction is best as one part of a comprehensive ecosystem of care, including therapy, friendship, chaplaincy, and other healing and support roles.
